Movie Number 23 : Up in The Air

Take a man whose job is to sack people, a young girl who has a degree
in psychology and believe in technology, and a sexy businesswoman who
looks for a bit of fun! All of these have to be in airports across the
USA
Jason Reitman did a really good job. The movie is witty, well directed
and leave a positive thinking towards love, relationship, and family.
Maybe we should focus more on all of the above instead of being
"sharks" and work to much, forgetting the importance of a connection.

To be continued

Movie Number 22: Where the Wild Things are

Well I don't know what to say to be honest. But it was one of the
first movie of that marathon that made me cry. I think I identified
myself with little Max, maybe I feel left by my friends an I need to
rebound with a group of mates.

Being alone as a kid must be difficult and I never felt that hence why
sometimes they believe they are someone else and pretend being
powerful ... I did thought I was a character or William Shakespeare
when I was younger, so I know what I am talking about.

Back to the movie, the creatures are like big teddy bears with their
own mind and spirit, own capacities of loving, hating and doubt. A bit
like you create you own world with your toys when you ar under the
sheets pretending it is a tent!

Anyway, the link between Carol and Max was so strong that I think a
few people may have cried at the end.... Intense and pure that how I
would describe the film.
To recommend when you are a bit down and you need a hug from a teddy
bear.

Movie Number 21 : All about Steve

So what can destroy the reputation of Sandra Bullock ? What make
Bradley Cooper look like an idiot and a second class actor?

At the end of the day there is not a movie Bradley did that can be
noticed so far. Playing with his cuteness is not sufficient and maybe
having a role a bit more "obscure" or "psychologically disturbed"
would help and increase the power of his acting. But well, even if she
won a Golden Globe, I really don't believe working with Ms Bullock
would help. After all, she never spark, really, with her acting; if
you think of Miss Congeniality or even Speed 2, that was rather dull,
entertaining but still dull. The kind of movie you watch after a
hangover.

Off we go.... Back in 1h40min

There are useless word, all have a meaning and there are words who
hurt .
" My brain is full of all kinds of information, some of it useful, so
of it not. I have recently discovered,hiding behind astrophysics and a
catalog of candy bars of the seventies, a previously hidden bit of
knowledge more important than everything else. It is this.... In
solving the puzzle of life there is one thing you must do. Find
somebody just as normal as you.... If not a whole bunch"

Movie Number 20 : Doubt

What a movie. And another one with Ms Streep, I was not really keen on
watching it but I thought if she is in with Philip Seymour Hoffman it
must be with watching. It still has been nominated many times at the
Globes and the Oscars!

The plot is easy: a none has doubts on the behaviour of a priest
towards a young black boy in the mid-sixties in USA.
Her own target will be to find if yes or no he misbehave.

The dialogue are sharp, intense and you feel the emotion from every
syllable they are saying. It is a game of who will speak the best. Who
will win the last word pronounced. Amy Adams has at the same time a
weak-actingwise and a strong -ellocutionwise role which make her life
has a sister and a woman difficult.

It is an emotional movie that people in doubt should see, and for me
so far one of the best interpretation from Meryl Streep.... She
deserved the Oscars but I haven't seen the reader yet so we will judge
later in the blog

Movie Number 19 : Nick and Norah's infinite playlist

What happen when a guy who's heart is broken record 12 albums for the one he thinks he loves, go into a search for his favourite Band and falls for a girl who he never thought he would? Well, you have Nick and Norah .... Ok, it is not the greatest story but he is kinda of cute, and nice.

If you liked "Juno", you will like this one. It is the same spirit, the same good music, look at the track list:

* 1. Speed of Sound - Chris Bell
* 2. Lover - Devendra Banhart
* 3. Middle Management - Bishop Allen
* 4. Ottoman - Vampire Weekend
* 5. Riot Radio - The Dead 60s
* 6. Fever - Takka Takka
* 7. Xavia - The Submarines
* 8. After Hours - We Are Scientists
* 9. Our Swords - Band Of Horses
* 10. Silvery Sleds - Army Navy
* 11. Baby You're My Light - Richard Hawley
* 12. Very Loud - Shout Out Louds
* 13. How To Say Goodbye - Paul Tiernan
* 14. Last Words - The Real Tuesday Weld
* 15. Nick & Norah's Theme - Mark Mothersbaugh

Is it a good inspiration ? I think it is. A good movie to relax, and to chill, a movie where you understand, even if you are not a teenager anymore, that love can be around the corner. And maybe by opening the mind we can find it.

The actors, Michael Cera(Juno) is cute in his own way, the couple of gay men are really funny, and I love the actress who plays Caroline ( she reminds me of myself!! her name is Ari Graynor, she plays in Fringe as well)... It even gave me the desire to re-watch "Juno" to go back on the atmosphere of teenagers ....

Watch the movie and now answer to the question : "Where is Fluffy?"

Movie Number 18 : The Book of Eli 2010

What to say, well, with my friend Kinga we did not know what to watch and with a misunderstanding we ended up sat in the comfy chairs in fornt of Denzel Washington .... Originally we wanted to see "all about Steve"( with the gorgeous Bradley Cooper)

So, dark, music starts ... movie is on.

Well, I guess I liked it ... but not entirely convinced, it is a genre that I never experimented before, and to be honest, if I did not have that cine card I probably would have never watched it.

So, the plot is : A lone man carries a book across a post apocalyptic country ( USA) in order to bring that book to a safe place where he will be protected and used to help people. Unfortunately, the path to the safe place is not as easy at it seems. Another man ( Gary Oldman) wants that book too, to become more powerful and dominate the destructed world.

The movie is really obscure, and bring you to reflect on "why they all want that book?". There is obviously a reason for that and you will have to watch the movie to understand.

It has been bit long on the first part of the movie, at the end of the day, he is alone and he does not speak much. But the combat seen, even if they are bloody, they still are good, and the background music relaxes you enough not to be sick.

I did not regret, but I don't think I will see it again as I would do for other movies.

Movie Number 17 : Fame 2009

Tell me.... Who never dream of becoming a star? Well, start the Auditions for School of Performing Arts but I have to let you know that there the only money you pay for success is SWEAT !

A Little bit of History.

The "P.A", nickname for the school, was created in 1948, yest that long ago, but unfortunately the last students left in 1984 date of the closure of the school. If you want the address is on West 46th Street in Time Square. A few famous people went to that school such as : Irene Cara, Al Pacino, Suzanne Pleshette, Suzanne Vega, or Liza Minelli .... and the list go on ....

As the movie filmed in 1980, the remake is split into sections: Auditions, Somophore, Junior and Senior years. The remake keep the inspiration of the original version, and even Debbie Allen ( Mrs Grat) is a cameo as the Principal of the school. The way it had been shot, by splitting it, is a good idea to keep it, however, it is difficult to identify ourselves to one in particular as we are jumping from one section to another without link.
The 2009 movie, introduce some fresh figures to our world, the soundtrack is good, even if they only kept 2 songs from the original : "Fame" and "out there on my own", the second title is interpreted by Naturi Naughton who sparkles all along the movie. Unfortunately, some of the young actor might need strong acting classes ( Asher Brook) as they might be brilliant on their specific such as Dancing or Singing, but I found the acting is not at their best.
The vocals, I have to say, are really good, and the dancers know their job ! The "Black and Gold" dancing scene is WOW !

I spent 2h watching it, and I have to admit, It was fun, nice, entertaining but it has some long scenes which could have been more elaborated or simply cut.

Download it or watch it on-line, or even better get the DVD ... If you liked the 1980 movie,you will like this remake with no doubt.

Movie Number 16 : La Mome - Story of Edith Piaf

The laugh, the scream, the misery and the french accent.
In order to write this one, I had to undust a CD of La Mome, and play it to recreate the atmosphere of the movie which not only made me shed a tear but also gave me goose bumps.

Yes, I fell in love once again with the charismatic Edith Piaf, thanks to Marion Cotillard, who gave the full of herself to bring to the young and less young the "regain" of admiration and love we all had in the Paris between 1935 and beyond.

I believe this one of the movie everyone should see to understand the power of LOVE and Passion for someone, for singing, even on a death bed she still had the strength to carry on and to sing with her powerful voice. We have to admit that everyone had listen once in its life "L'Hymne a l'Amour".

If only you could listen that song,understand the lyrics, and I am sure like me right now you will have a tear, and if you are able to say it to the one you truly love, it will be the best declaration. The love she carried to Marcel Cerdan was so intense that going back to the movie, you will understand the real strength of that song.

That is the best movie I have watch so far, and I am scared to continue watching other fearing the disaster but my mission is far from being accomplished. But Number 16 will stay in my heart forever .....

Lack of word, no too much emotion , and I might have to finish this post later ....

Movie Number 15 : Bring it on Fight to the Finish (V)

Just a movie to relax and honestly the whole series of Bring it on ..it is just fun ... and we can see the performances of new comers such as :

Bring it on : Kirsten Dunst or Gabrielle Union ( Ugly Betty)
Bring it on Again : None to notify
Bring it on : All or Nothing : Hayden Panettiere ( Heroes) or Solange Knowles ( sister of Beyonce)
Bring it on : In it to win it : None to notify
Bring it on : Fight to the Finish : Christina Milian or Cody Longo ( Fame)

Just a cool movie ... and it is good to relax your brain and easy 15th movie gained !!! lol

Movie number 14 : Daybreakers

I woke up the snow is falling, the weather is cold, and the sun has not set yet. It is all quiet and dark I feel like I was in "30 days of Night" ! Which link us to the next movie of the list "Daybreakers". The first Vampire movie of the year and luckily Ethan Hawkes is in.

For the ones who does not know him, he was the shy boy in "Dead Poet's society", Jesse in "Before Sunrise" or Vincent in "Gattaca"... I am sure everyone who seen "DPS" will remember the monologue of Todd Anderson staring at Walt Whitman picture ( Truth. Truth, is like. like a blanket who leaves your feet cold. You push it, Stretch it, it'll never enough. You kick at it, beat it, it'll never cover any of us. From the moment we enter crying to the moment we leave dying, it will just cover your face as you wail and cry and scream). One of my favourite line.

In this movie, Ethan plays an Hematologist who tries to find a substitute to human blood, under the control of Sam Neil (Jurrassik Park). To help him out, he is joint by Willem Dafoe ( Spiderman / The English Patient) and Claudia Karvan ( Star Wars III) .... The cast is let say good, after all they all proved their capacities of acting. The directors , the brothers Spierig, which it is only their second movie together ( first one "Undead").

When I sat on the red armchair, my hopes are in Hawkes and Dafoe ...

The light are dimming, and the movie starts .... Hummmm ......

After 1h40min movie, I am in one word : Disappointed.

Yes, the script is original: the planet is filled with Vampires, the humans are farmed for their blood ( as we do with animals). The blood reserves start being low and Ethan is looking for a substitute. So far, it is interesting. But the story starts being confusing when Willem and Ethan meet.... From one day to another no more blood, the vampires transformed into strange creature, and even if they found a "cure" it leave a bitter taste in the mouth. It seems that the Spierig brothers got tired of writing and they just finished their movie a bit fast with no real conclusion or anything for their audience to thing. No psychological opening, no wondering, nothing,just "the end".

On the good side, the effect are good, Ethan Hawkes acts - at the end of the day it is job- Sam Neil as the bad guy is devilishly brilliant, The creatures are well designed and up to the middle of the movie I was really into it ... after I started yawning !

I was impatiently waiting for this movie, as the first of the Vampire wave which apparently will dominate our screen this year, but to be honest it does not start well. And I hope that the next ones will be better.

Direct from Humanland ... Ephy !

Movie number 13 : It's Complicated

Another Saturday and another movie. In this period of cold and loneliness, we do, all of us, need a bit of cheer up! Thankfully, one of my favourite actress made a comedy: Ms Streep. Let's say another one, it seems like she is doing only comedy in the past few years .. Even though in the meantime she played in "Doubt" ( which I have not seen yet)

I think I fell for Ms Streep, since I have since "Kramer vs Kramer" and she is one of the most productive Actress, of her generation, in the last 30 years, with over 50 movies and a full shelf of Awards ( 2 Oscars, 1 BAFTA, 1 Palme d'Or, 2 Emmys, 6 Golden Globe, 5 Grammy), and she is the Actress who hold the record of Awards Nominations I think we can say she is good !! hahahah
As accompany Ms Streep as one of the funniest actor: Steve Martin, and Mr Alec Baldwin ( ex husband of Kim Basinger) - maybe the last one will have his career re-lived as his last movies were pure flops!

So take a divorced couple, let they meet at the graduation of of their son, sleep in the same hotel and share a bottle or more of wine ... The ex Wife become "the other woman", even if in the mean time she meets Steve Martin who is her architect, and kind of fell for him ... The storyline is well defined, we know where we are going and where it will end with no doubt. If they are divorced there is a reason why.
This movies taught me a few things:
1/ If you are divorced, remember why you are and why you are now friends ( if you are )
2/ You are never too old to flirt ( Ms Streep is 61 and Martin is 64)
3/ You are never too old to smoke a joint and have fun!

I left the cinema with a grin, and I did spend a really enjoyable moment... it is a movie for laughing, a little bit crying and a good lump of fresh air when you feel torn and sad

Movie Number 12: Inglorious Basterds

The days continue, and after the last one, I needed to view a "real" movie .... lol. Hence why I have chosen the last Quentin Tarantino: "Inglorious Basterds"

What is the plot ... Well, as all Tarantino movies, the plot is easy to get, but once you start watching the movie, it is all getting a bit confused !!

So, after waiting a few days before watching the film, why I don't know maybe to feel the right time and mood to focus on the scenario. So I had decided on that very night to click on the icon of the movie. Installed nicely on the bed, pillows underneath the head, a bowl of popcorn and a bottle of red wine( always handy).

As surprised as I was the movie opened in French .... To continue in English, with a spark of German. Yes, if you don't know the plot, the story is based on the Second World War, and how a group of Mercenaries led by Brad Pitt tried to kill a large number of High ranked Germans.
The movie is divided in 5 parts, successive and for once in order ( i.e: Pulp Fiction) ... and without any doubt, it is violent, funny and we would have hoped the war would have stopped this way!

For the details : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361748/

If I had to rate this movie, I don't really know what to mark to be honest... I believe Tarantino has his own rate and marks, and i really think his movies should not be judged but just appreciated as they are.

A little bit basic this one ... sorry ....

Movie Number 11 : St Trinian's 2 "The Legend of Fritton's Gold"

And another day worth of movie. After arriving late at the cinema in
Shaftesbury avenue I have to go and see the next movie available!
Hummm... Not sure about the choice but well I am sat now in the dark
ready to watch the sequel of St Trinian's.. Another movie with the
great an sexy Colin firth, hopefully I will keep my crush on him after
that one!

Movie Starts speaks in 1h40min

Ok i survived the teenage queens of St Trinian's, it was not as bad as
I thought but not as good as the first one either! Colin is still
handsome even with a beard and long hair... As per Rupert, well, he is
a good actor and the role of Miss Fritton suits him very well.
However, there are a few things in the movie that did no really fits,
the fact that one of the girls aloud was in the movie, she is much
older than the rest of the cast and to be honest does not act, does
not sing, she is just here. Did the producers needed her to sell the
movie to the youngsters?The storyline was not that basic- two rings to
find, a treasure map to discover, and of course a pirates gold- but I
found it a bit copied on "The Goonies" except that it was driven by a
bunch of girls. The end was a bit too much to my taste. These critics
asides, the movie stays funny, entertaining and enjoyable to watch if
you are willing to pay otherwise it is the kind of movie which can
wait to be played on a DVD or even better on TV in a couple of years.
